Labor Day DUIs in Erie County, Kelleys Island, and Put-in-Bay

Labor Day is the last opportunity for many people to go on a fun and relaxing trip to Put-in-Bay or Kelleys Island before the summer comes to an end. Since alcohol is often involved in these trips, DUIs do occur.

In fact, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported that over 750 individuals died from drunk driving crashes from 2010 to 2014 during Labor Day weekend. To reduce the amount of drunk driving accidents that occur during Labor Day weekend, DUI roadblocks are often established by law enforcement agencies.

What is a DUI Roadblock?

A DUI roadblock is a checkpoint intended to screen for drunk drivers. DUI roadblocks are usually established at locations like Put-in-Bay or Kelleys Island that have a long history of alcohol-related accidents.

Seven days before a DUI roadblock is established, a public notice must be provided by the police and include the general time and location. Roadblocks can be found on local police websites, in the newspaper, attorney websites, or even social media.

A few hours before the roadblock is established, another notice should be announced and include the start and end time as well as other specifics. The roadblock should also be marked by traffic cones and lit by portable lights and emergency lights from police cars.

If you enter a DUI roadblock, you’ll be signaled to pass through it or stopped by a police officer. If you do get stopped, you can expect the law enforcement officer to inspect you for signs of intoxication. Bloodshot eyes, slurred speech, and an odor of alcohol are all examples of these signs. In the event that you demonstrate one or more of these signs, you will be taken to a screening area so that standardized field sobriety tests can be administered.
